Meditating: Connecting To Your Source

I recently became interested in meditation after watching a Youtube video by Afrogenic. Yes, she is a born again Christian and had all the right arguments to back up why you should incorporate meditation in your everyday life.

After that I watched another video where Oprah Winfrey interviewed Deepak Chopra an Indian medical doctor, who is also well versed in the art of meditation and yoga.

From that interview I got the information I needed to convince me the more of the benefits and why I should incorporate meditation into my daily routine.

Chopra defined meditation as the "Progressive quieting of the mind till it reaches the source of the mind which is what we call the soul or spirit."

Chopra says that meditation takes you to your source. If you are a Christian, you know that your source is Almighty God your Father and the creator of heaven and earth.

Chopra continued, "It's the most effective way to manage stress. When you are stressed, you don't sleep well. Your relationship won't work. Stress is the number 1 epidemic of our civilization."

He also said there are some biological effects. Like your blood pressure going up, your immune system gets compromised.

So, the first benefit of meditation according to him is the management of stress. It improves your physical health, your mental health, your emotional health. Your life gets better if you start meditating.

But the real benefit he said, is that it opens the door to your spirit, the field of infinite possibilities. It opens the door to your soul so you loose the fear of death.

It also opens the door to your creativity, because you are connected to God, the source of creation.

It actually opens up what  Chopra calls, "Platonic qualities of divine truth or attitudes - kindness, love, compassion, joy, equanimity, profound peace or what Christians say is the "Peace that passes all understanding."

So, meditation starts from the physical, moves to the mental and opens the door to the spiritual.

Chopra adds that there are few things you need to do to take care of your physical wellbeing. Meditation is one of them.  Good sleep he says, is very important because now we know that sleep is when our soul refreshes our body.

Exercise is another even if its just brisk 30 minutes walk every day, Chopra says.

He also added that food high in what we call phytochemicals - these are chemicals that are from the energy of the sun, is good. So, anything that has the colours of the rainbow or the six stairs of life - sweet, sour, pungent, etc.

He advises that you need to try to maintain ideal weight and be emotionally free. That is, no resentment, no grievances, no hostilities, no guilt. Forgive everyone that has wronged you.

"If you begin to live a life where you have no single person to forgive that means you are doing well," he concluded.
